Transportation Information

Metroplex Transportation: 

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is the public transit authority for Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett & University Park. They provide bus, light rail, paratransit, HOV lanes and vanpool services. 

Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The - T) is the public transit authority for The T's regular bus service, express bus service and the exciting Rider Request service that will take you places in Fort Worth, Lake Worth and Richland Hills. Phase One of the Trinity Railway Express is operating between Dallas and Irving. Phase Two in Tarrant County is operational as well. Developed by the T and DART, this new business-class service represents the first major joint venture between the two cities since the construction of DFW International Airport.

Commuter Rail Service Between Dallas & Fort Worth

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) in partnership with the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T) operates the Trinity Railway Express.

This has expanded our mobility across the Metroplex, the Trinity Railway Express provides commuters a comfortable way to ride to work and an opportunity to save money on insurance, gas, repairs and wear and tear on their vehicles.

Phase I of the Trinity Railway Express is operating between Dallas and Irving in Dallas County. Ft Worth Phase II, in Tarrant County, is operational as well. Developed by both the T and DART, offers new business-class service. Truly the scale of this project is a remarkable undertaking. This new Rail Service represents the first major joint venture between the two cities since the construction of DFW International Airport.

The Driving Experience

Commuting around the Dallas / Ft Worth Metroplex. Like any other major city has several major interstates and state highways are running through the metropolitan area.

The major east-west routes include Interstate 20 and Interstate 30, and highway 183 which connect Dallas and Fort Worth and lead on to other major Texas and US cities. 

Interstate 35 is the major north-south thoroughfare that connects the Dallas / Ft Worth Metroplex with southern Texas cities as Austin the State Capitol, and Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, and running northerly thru Oklahoma, Kansas and beyond.

Texas Interstate 35 splits to become I-35E and I-35W and rejoins on the north and south sides of the cities, depending on which direction you are traveling. I-35E travels through the Fort Worth area and I-35W travels through the Dallas area. Interstate 45 travels south to Houston. 

There are several major state and US highways including 77, 67, 75, 175 and 183. Dallas is circled by I-635, which includes a portion of I-20. Loop 12 circles the entire city and is located within 635. 

There is a toll road named the Dallas North Tollway, which runs northerly from downtown Dallas up through the city of Dallas, continuing into Addison, Carrolton, Plano, to Frisco, with a major connection to the 190 George Bush, and 121. Fees vary depending on distance traveled on the toll way between tollbooths, so the fee varies from 45¢ to 75¢ each way traveled. 

Roadway Common Names

  • Central Expressway is US Highway 75. 
  • North Central Expressway is US Highway 75 northward from downtown.
  • South Central Expressway is US Highway 75 southward from downtown.
  • Woodall Rodgers Freeway is Spur 366 connecting I-35 East with US Highway 75 (Central Expressway) and I-45.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway is I-635 including I-20 south of the city. 
  • President George Bush Highway is State Highway 190.
  • Airport Freeway is the State Highway 183 from State Highway 114 to the south entrance of D/FW airport.
  • John Carpenter Freeway is State Highway 183 and Highway 114 from I-35 East to the north entrance of D/FW airport. 
  • C. F. Hawn Freeway is US Highway 175 south of downtown Dallas. 
  • Loop 12 includes Northwest Highway on the north, Buckner Boulevard on the east, Ledbetter Drive on the south, and Walton Walker Boulevard on the west. 
  • Marvin D. Love Freeway is US Highway 67 from I-35 East south of downtown. 
  • Julius Schepps Freeway is I-45 south of downtown. 
  • Stemmons Freeway is I-35 East northward from downtown.
  • R. L. Thronton Freeway begins as I-35 East and US Highway 77 south of Dallas at the I-635 interchange passes south of downtown and continues east as I-30. 
  • J. Elmer Weaver Freeway is US Highway 67 from I-635 to the south
